Spiral lanes, legends and views in the borough that has stood the test of time
As you climb from the seafront toward the hill, Sanremo’s streets narrow, twist around themselves and draw a spiral that keeps rising to the top of the hill: this is La Pigna, the medieval core of the city and one of the best preserved in the entire Riviera. A maze of covered alleys, arches and stairways born to defend the town against Saracen raids, now visited with different eyes: those of travellers seeking the most authentic Sanremo, far from the seafront and the Casino.
The tour starts in Piazza Cassini, at the entrance to the old town, where the guide explains how this distinctive snail-shaped layout came to be. From there you walk up Via Palma and Via Cavour, noticing the connecting arches between the buildings, once used as structural and anti-seismic reinforcements, alongside still-active craft workshops and local legends tied to the neighbourhood.
The climb ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, the highest point in La Pigna, with views over the lower town, the harbour and, on clear days, the French coast.
