A maze of covered alleys, arches and stairways born to defend the town against Saracen raids, now visited with different eyes: those of travellers seeking the most authentic Sanremo, far from the seafront and the Casino.<\/p>\n<p>The tour starts in Piazza Cassini, at the entrance to the old town, where the guide explains how this distinctive snail-shaped layout came to be. From there you walk up Via Palma and Via Cavour, noticing the connecting arches between the buildings, once used as structural and anti-seismic reinforcements, alongside still-active craft workshops and local legends tied to the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>The climb ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, the highest point in La Pigna, with views over the lower town, the harbour and, on
